Fernández de Kirchner arrives to court as corruption trial opens

The Unidad Ciudadana senator arrived at 11.38am local time, after a 25-minute trip from her apartment in Recoleta.

Former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has arrived to the Comodoro Py courthouse, as she prepares to sit in the dock for the first of a series of corruption trials.

The Unidad Ciudadana senator arrived at 11.38am local time, after a 25-minute trip from her apartment in Recoleta. After arriving, she waved briefly to supporters who were waiting outside the building.

Security agents cordoned off the federal court room, known as the AMIA room, in Buenos Aires as she arrived.

The former president is accused of embezzlement in public works projects during her 2007-2015 presidency.

She denies any wrongdoing.

Fernández de Kirchner was widely expected to run for the presidency against President Mauricio Macri during the October election. But she surprised everyone over the weekend announcing she'll seek the vice-presidency, with her former Cabinet chief Alberto Fernández at the top of the ticket.

Her running mate also served briefly served under her late husband and predecessor, Néstor Kirchner, and is now one of the at least 150 witnesses in the case.
