US State Department revokes Héctor Timerman's visa

The former Foreign Minister’s health is believed to be in a fragile condition.

Héctor Timmerman was yesterday turned away from the check-in service at Ezeiza airport after the US State Department revoked his visa.

Timerman was attempting to board an American Airlines flight from Buenos Aires to New York to undergo medical treatment. The former Foreign Minister’s health is believed to be in a fragile condition.

He is also fighting on a legal front: against charges he and other former officials of the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner administration conspired with their Iranian counterparts to secure immunity for Iranian suspects in the 1994 AMIA bombing case. This in exchange for better trade deals for Argentina.

Timerman’s lawyer Graciana Peñafort said Tuesday that she was planning to formally request his release from house arrest on the grounds that “this is a question of life or death”.

Federal judge Sergio Torres, who is filling in for judge Claudio Bonadío on leave, granted Timerman permission to leave the country for medical treatment.

His lawyer said “Bonadio and his court” held responsibility in any deterioration of Timerman’s health.

“They must understand that this is a question of life or death”, she said.

The former Foreign Affairs minister will “request that the US State Department review its decision and authorise his entry (to the US) so he can continue his treatment”, she added.
