Argentina's gymnastic squad faces criminal complaint over sexual abuse allegations

The complaint comes just days after allegations that three youth players at River Plate football club were sexually abused and that a child prostitution ring operated at Independiente Club.

The Argentine Olympic Committee (COA) has lodged a criminal complaint against the country’s gymnastics squad over accusations that a trainer sexually abused a former gymnastic 20 years ago.

The victim, a 40-year-old former gymnast, told ex teammates at a recent meeting that he had been sexually abused 20 years ago by one of the squad’s trainers, Noticias Argentinas reported.

The complaint comes just days after allegations that three youth players at River Plate football club were sexually abused and that a child prostitution ring operated at Independiente Club.

The artistic gymnastics trainer for the men’s team was a member of the Argentine Olympic Committee at the time of the alleged abuse.

The current Committee president Gerardo Wethein lodged the criminal complaint against the gymnastics squad and confirmed that the individual was immediately sacked.

“We made the request so that those responsible pay the price (for their alleged crimes), but we hope the victims are protected. We cannot allow this to happen as an institution. Despite this having happened privately, we as an institution have a responsibility”, Wethein told the Todo Noticias news network. The case is in the hands of prosecutor Guillermo Marijuán and has been assigned to federal judge Sebastián Ramos.
