IOC chief: Buenos Aires could be excellent host of 2032 Olympics

'Almost a million' spectators attended events at the Youth Olympics, reveals Argentina's representative to the IOC.

Buenos Aires could aspire for more than the Youth Olympics it has just staged.

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said on Thursday that it was up to Argentina to make a bid for the 2032 Summer Games but added the capital city would be an excellent host.

"After seeing this outstanding success, I do not see anyone from the IOC who has any doubt about Argentina and Buenos Aires' ability to organise another Olympic Games of excellence," Bach said at a press conference on the closing day of the Youth Olympics.

Bach indicated however that this "will depend on the Argentines deciding if they want to be candidates."

Gerardo Werthein, who heads the Argentine Olympic Committee, said there was no consensus yet on a 2032 Buenos Aires bid.

Werthein revealed that "almost a million viewers, a record" had attended events at the Games.

"There was an enormous passion throughout the games," he said, who also highlighted the "historic" medal count achieved by Argentine athletes who took 24 medals, 11 of them gold.

He also revealed that the city of Ushuaia, in the southernmost part of the country, expressed interest in hosting the winter games.

The next Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo in 2020, Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.
