6.0-magnitude earthquake hits Mendoza and San Luis

A relatively strong earthquake, reaching 6.3 magnitude, was recorded in the provinces of Mendoza and San Luis on Tuesday, with aftershocks and tremors felt as far away as Cordoba, Rosario and even in Buenos Aires City.

Luckily, there was no notable damage or injuries, according to official reports.

The tremor occurred at 8.10pm local time, with its epicentre recorded as 77 kilometres southwest of the city of San Luis, 198 kilometres southeast of the capital of Mendoza and 60 kilometres southeast of the Mendozan town of Paz, according to the National Institute for Seismic Prevention (INPRES).

INPRES also reported that the quake originated some 14 kilometres underground.

The institute added that seven earthquakes above a magnitude of 6.0 have been recorded since November last year.

People posted videos on social media showing ceiling lamps and door chains swaying.
