First election results: Fernández 47.2%, Macri-Pichetto 41.4%

Initial results in Argentina's presidential election show a tighter race than expected, with Alberto Fernández leading President Mauricio Macri by close to six points.

That's down on early exit polls and surveys leading up to Sunday's general election.

If the results were to continue in that manner, Argentina's presidential race would go to a run-off.

With 71.58 percent of votes counted, Frente de Todos candidate Fernández has 47.36 percent, with Mauricio Macri of Juntos por el Cambio on 41.22 percent.

In third is Robert Lavagna, of Consenso Federal, with 6.14 percent, while left-winger Frente de Izquierda candidate Nicolás Del Caño has 2.06 percent.

News channels quickly began calling the race in Buenos Aires City for Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Laretta after initial results emerged.

With 72.5 percent of votes tallied, the incumbent had 55.5 percent against Frente de Todos rival Matías Lammens.

Axel Kicillof also looked on curse to win in Buenos Aires Province, defeating María Eugenia Vidal.
