Línea F – Buenos Aires City unveils plan for new Subte underground line
Buenos Aires City Mayor Jorge Macri unveils plans for capital's first new subway line in a quarter century; New 'Línea F' route will have 11 stops, connecting Barracas and Palermo.
Buenos Aires City Mayor Jorge Macri has unveiled plans to construct the capital’s first new subway line in a quarter of a century.
The new underground transit route will play a key role in facilitating north-south travel across the capital, relieve congestion on existing lines and increase passenger numbers, said Macri at a press conference on Friday.
The new nine-kilometre ‘Línea F’ route will have 11 stops and connect Barracas, in the south of the City, with the popular Palermo neighbourhood, he revealed.
The new route will be the sixth line of the city's underground transit system. It will intersect with five other underground lines (A, B, C, D, H) and the General Roca overground rail station, passing through the neighbourhoods of Barracas, Constitución, San Cristobal, Monserrat, San Nicolás, Recoleta and finally, Palermo.
Macri, who unveiled the project at the Facultad de Derecho underground station, confirmed that a tender would go out for the construction work, which is scheduled to begin next year.
“Today we are taking a historic step, the ‘Línea F,’ with ‘F’ for the ‘future.’ We are proud to be able to undertake the largest urban infrastructure project in the whole country,” said the mayor, who took office in December 2023.
City Hall says the line will carry more than 300,000 passengers a day once it is up and running. Officials said it will be “modern,” equipped with the latest signal system technology and new air-conditioned carriages. The project also includes the construction of a depot and an above-ground workshop for light and heavy maintenance.
Under the plans, construction will take part in two stages. The first section consists of six new stations: Brandsen, Constitución, Cochabamba, Chile, Congreso and Tucumán.
The first stage will require an estimated investment of US$1.05 billion, including “rolling stock,” a reference to powered and unpowered vehicles, according to the government.
Total completion of the route will cost US$1.85 billion, said officials. Completion is estimated for 2031.
Macri also announced the installation of two electric TramBUS lines to connect neighbourhoods in the north and south of the capital.
