Argentina scrape through to set up tie against Spain in Davis Cup quarters
A 3-0 humbling at the hands of Germany on Wednesday had left Argentina on the verge of elimination. But results elsewhere went their way.
Argentina will face Spain in the quarter-finals of the new-style Davis Cup, after the Albiceleste claimed on of the best second-place finish qualifications spots.
A 3-0 humbling at the hands of Germany on Wednesday had left Argentina on the verge of elimination, prompting Captain Gastón Gaudio to say the side was "practically more outside than inside."
However, results elsewhere pushed the national team into a qualification spot and into the last eight, joining the six group winners and Russia, who qualified as the best runner-up of the group stage.
The team will now line up against Spain this Friday in one of the quarter-finals of this reformed tournament.
"Aaaaaaaaadentro .... Quarters vs. Spain", tweeted Argentine team-member Diego Schwartzman, after confirmation of the good news had come through.
Spain have a selection dilemma for the upcoming clash, after Roberto Bautista left Thursday due to family problems.
Pablo Carreño or Feliciano López appear to be the most likely replacements for Bautista, who previously played against Russia and Croatia.
