Argentina registered 75 deaths from coronavirus on Monday (July 6), the highest daily death toll yet since the start of the pandemic.
Health Ministry officials said that 2,632 new cases of the coronavirus had been confirmed over the same period.
The portfolio's daily report said that 1.3 percent of these new cases were considered imported, with 34 percent from close contact with confirmed cases and 47 percent from community circulation. The remainder are under investigation.
More than 80,000 people have now been infected with Covid-19 in Argentina. To date,1,582 fatalities have been recorded.
More than 90 percent of all confirmed cases are in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (AMBA), where some 14 million of the country's 44 million inhabitants live.
Residents in the region returned to a strict lockdown last Wednesday (July 1) and restrictions will remain in place until at least July 17. Officials will decide what happens next based on the progression of the virus in Argentina.
According to the Health Ministry's report, 676 people remain hospitalised in intensive care units (ICU) in the country, 26 percent up on a week ago. In Buenos Aires City, bed occupation in ICUs stands at 51.6 percent, with the figure rising to 58.8 percent in the Conurbano.
President Alberto Fernández first imposed a nationwide lockdown to tackle the spread of the virus on March 20, but since then most of Argentina's provinces have loosened restrictions, with social isolation measure now more flexible, depending on the evolution of the virus in each individual province.
