Former president Mauricio Macri and ex-Buenos Aires Province Governor Daniel Scioli have sent their congratulations to US president-elect Donald Trump.

Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election, was described as a “dear friend” by Macri in a post on social media.

“I want to congratulate you on your victory and wish you the best for this new presidency, dear friend,” wrote the ex-president, who led Argentina from 2015 to 2019 before being ejected from office by voters.

Macri and Trump, while not close personal friends, have been acquaintances for years.

In 2018, the then-US president visited Argentina for the G20 Leaders Summit, with the duo holding talks about the “defence of democracy, the promotion of prosperity and development, security and the defence of human rights.”

They also discussed the fight against “drug-trafficking, terrorism, organised crime and corruption.”

Macri’s congratulations for Trump comes after President Javier Milei warmly celebrated the Republican leader’s victory in his own post on the X social network.

Scioli, who lost the 2015 election to Macri running at the head of a Peronist ticket, hailed Trump’s “magnificent” victory over Harris and said the win would open a new stage of bilateral relations between Buenos Aires and Washington.

"Congratulations, Donald Trump, on this magnificent electoral victory. May it mark the beginning of a new era in which, together with President Javier Milei, you will achieve important advances for our nations, propelling them towards a future of greater freedom and prosperity," the veteran politician wrote on X.

Scioli – who now serves in Milei’s government as Tourism, Environment & Sports secretary – also shared a photograph of himself and Trump from 1989, when the two met in Atlantic City.
