Argentina’s right celebrates Trump’s victory in US election

Figures from Mauricio Macri’s PRO party celebrate Republican leader’s win in US presidential election as Milei government officials revel in news.

Leading figures from Argentina’s political right are hailing Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election and linking the win to President Javier Milei’s domestic triumph last year.

Officials in President Javier Milei’s government rushed to celebrate the Republican leader’s defeat of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, describing it as a victory for “freedom.”

Vice-President Victoria Villarruel congratulated Trump on “his historic return to the White House, which he was able to obtain through his courageous defence of the values that identify all Americans.”

She cited “love of country, defence of life and family, and the right of every human being to develop their life project in freedom, invoking the protection of God, the source of all reason and justice,” as cause for the GOP win in a post on X.

For her part, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich shared a series of reflections on social media she claimed explained the reasons for the victory.

“Strong and provocative leaderships and intelligent nationalism overcome the new rights promoted by the left,” commented Bullrich, a former left-wing guerrilla who is now a hard-line right-wing security hawk.

Lawmaker Gabriel Bornoroni, the head of the La Libertad Avanza caucus in the lower house Chamber of Deputies, wrote excitedly that “ideas of freedom win all over the world.”

He predicted that ties between Buenos Aires and Washington would strengthen as a result.

“Milei and Donald Trump are going to be the champions of progress and freedom. Great times are coming for our country and for the whole continent,” forecast Bornoroni.

Fellow deputy José Luis Espert, the head of the congressional Budget & Finance Committee, also congratulated Trump.

“Congratulations to Donald Trump for being elected President of the United States. From Argentina, we reaffirm our commitment to continue strengthening our alliance and working for the present and the future of our citizens. Make America Great Again,” he posted on social media.

The head of the libertarian causes in the upper house Senate, Ezequiel Atauche, said that Trump’s victory “confirms the global trend of citizens choosing models in which states intervene less by facilitating individual and market freedoms.”

“Once again Milei sees it before the others, thanks to his great relationship with Donald Trump, a window of opportunity opens for Argentina that we must take advantage of,” he added.

PRO joins festivities

Echoing the government officials, a number of key figures in the right-wing PRO party also sent congratulations to Trump.

Mauricio Macri, Cristian Ritondo, Diego Santilli and Alejandro Finocchiaro were among those who publicly celebrated the result.

Macri, whose 2015-2019 administration briefly coincided with the Republican leader's first term in office, congratulated Trump, a longtime business colleague, on social media.

“I want to congratulate you on your victory and wish you all the best for this new presidency, dear friend,’ said the PRO party chief.

Fellow national deputy Diego Santilli published a video of Trump's celebrations and accompanied it with a message of jubilation.

“America FREE and GREAT again!” wrote Santilli, who ran as a candidate for Buenos Aires Province governor in the last election.

The head of the PRO causes in the lower house, Cristian Ritondo, delivered similar remarks.

“Great news for the free world! Congratulations president @realDonaldTrump,” tweeted Ritondo.

PRO deputy Alejandro Finocchiaro also expressed his satisfaction.

“Once again American democracy demonstrated its strength. Society once again chose freedom as the supreme value of the individual. Congratulations, President Trump,” he said.
