More than a million vote ‘blank’ or spoil ballots cast in Argentina's midterms

Over a million people voted blank or spoiled their ballots in last Sunday’s  elections, a figure representing almost 3.5 percent of the electorate nationwide, while running as high as 14 percent at the local level.

According to the provisional date, blank ballots totalled 717,535 in the country’s 24 districts.

The district with the highest percentage of voters not leaning towards any electoral option was La Rioja, where 11.22 percent of the local electorate, or a total of 22,980 voters, introduced empty envelopes into the ballot-box.

At the other extreme, the City of Buenos Aires registered the lowest percentage of blank votes, 0.94 percent, with 17,563 citizens not feeling attracted by any candidate and preferring to deposit their envelope without any ballot.

Furthermore, 436,351 voters spoiled their ballots.
