Marcos Peña: 'We believe we have completed a very good election.'
Cabinet Chief declares that Sunday's PASO vote was carried out in 'peace and tranquility,' though Frente de Todos camp expresses confidence about its performance.
As the PASO (Open, Simultaneous and Obligatory Primaries) vote came to a close Sunday evening, government officials were expressing satisfaction with the electoral process and the integrity of the day’s vote.
Cabinet Chief Marcos Peña, speaking from the election night bunker of Juntos por el Cambio (Together for Change), stated that the democratic process was carried out in “peace and tranquility.”
“We believe that we have completed a very good election,” Peña said.
Interior Minister Rogelio Frigerio confirmed that at least 75 percent of the electorate participated in Sunday’s vote, an increase from 71 percent from the 2015 PASO.
“We have greatly increased participation,” he said.
Alberto Fernández, presidential hopeful for the Frente de Todos ("Front for All") grouping, expressed early optimism toward the showing of the Kirchnerite coalition.
“We remain comfortable that we have came out in first,” Fernández said.
Peña played down early speculation of a poor showing for the government and it’s allies,
“We are content with what we are seeing and the preliminary information,” Peña said. “We are awaiting official results.”
