Argentina's press laments Albiceleste defeat, hails end of an era

Argentina's newspapers reacted with disappointment on Sunday after the Albiceleste's 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Several media outlets suggested the loss could mark the end of Lionel Scaloni's tenure as national team coach.

Most publications portrayed the defeat as the close of a remarkable era for Argentina, while raising questions over Scaloni's future and Lionel Messi's international career.

La Nación said Scaloni's side "held out for almost two hours thanks to a huge performance from [goalkeeper] Emiliano Martínez, played much of the final with 10 men after [midfielder] Enzo Fernández's dismissal and came within minutes of taking the match to penalties, but ultimately conceded at the end."

The newspaper acknowledged Spain had control for much of the match, which was settled by Ferran Torres' goal in the 106th minute. The breakthrough came after sustained pressure on Martínez's goal.

Clarín described the final as a possible farewell for the celebrated 'Scaloneta' era, writing: "In what could be Lionel Messi's farewell after six World Cups, the Scaloneta closes a hugely successful cycle with four titles and five consecutive finals."

Sports daily Olé focused on the emotion shown by Scaloni and Messi after the final whistle. It described the coach's "heartbreaking tears and uncertainty over his future," while highlighting "Messi's emotional tears with the runners-up medal around his neck and the ovation from the crowd."

Sports website TyC Sports also highlighted Scaloni's post-match comments, noting that the coach "raised doubts over his future" by saying he had not yet decided whether to remain in charge as his contract nears its conclusion.

Perfil argued that "the Albiceleste spent the match chasing the ball and never found the attacking play needed to threaten Spain's goal."
