Argentina surpasses 7,000 virus deaths with daily record of fatalities

A total of 350,854 cases of Covid-19 and 7,366 deaths from the virus have now been registered since March.

Argentina surpassed 7,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus on Monday with a new daily record of 381 fatalities.

The Health Ministry's daily update revealed that 350,854 cases of Covid-19 and 7,366 deaths from the virus have now been registered since March.

With about 14 million inhabitants, the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (AMBA), concentrates 90 percent of all cases registered to date.

Bed occupancy in intensive care units (ICUs) nationwide stands at 57.13 percent nationwide, rising to 64.5 percent in the AMBA region, officials added.

The increase in cases in the AMBA region over the past few weeks has forced the government to halt its progressive relaxation of confinement measures, which have been in place in some form since March 20.

In the rest of the country, lockdown restrictions are looser, though some have tightened measures as cases rise.

Argentina has "registered a daily average of 6,034 cases" in the past few weeks, said Health Access Secretary Carla Viccotti, earlier on Monday.
