Argentina recorded an increase of 0.5 points in the infant mortality rate between 2023 and 2024, rising from 8 to 8.5 deaths per 1,000 live births.
This represents one of the relatively few upward variations observed since 2000. It follows a previous increase recorded between 2021 and 2022.
According to a statistics report released by the Health Ministry and accessed by fact-checking outlet Chequeado, a total of 3,513 deaths of children under 12 months of age were registered in 2024.
At provincial level, Corrientes recorded the highest infant mortality rate, at 14 deaths per 1,000 live births, followed by Chaco (11.8) and La Rioja (11.7). Formosa and Santiago del Estero both reported rates of 10.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. Buenos Aires City, the nation’s capital, registered the lowest rate in the country, with 4.9 deaths per 1,000 live births.
In absolute terms, Buenos Aires Province recorded the highest number of infant deaths (1,236), followed by Santa Fe (275) and Córdoba (231).
Although the overall trend in infant mortality has been downward since 2000, when the rate stood at 16.6 deaths per 1,000 live births, increases were recorded in the periods 2001–2002, 2006–2007, 2021–2022 and 2023–2024.
The infant mortality rate is the number of deaths of children under one year of age per 1,000 live births in a given year and geographical area.
