The deputy principal and a teacher's assistant at a public school in the Greater Buenos Aires district of Moreno died Thursday as a result of a gas explosion.
The explosion happened in the kitchen of the teachers' common area at School No 49 "Nicolás Avellaneda", at around 7 o'clock Thursday morning, the Noticias Argentinas news agency reported.
The fatal victims have been identified as Sandra Calamano, 48, the school's deputy principal and, Rubén Orlando Rodríguez, 45, a teacher's assistant.
Although authorities have not yet confirmed the origins of the explosion, police commented that "there seems to have been a gas explosion" in the hallway of the school.
It is believed that the force of the explosion knocked Calamaro's body into the "the front yard of a house in front of the school", while the corpse of the second victim landed in the courtyard of the school.
"It was not a major tragedy because the students enter 15 or 20 minutes later, otherwise we would have been facing a disaster", an employee at the school said.
About 75 percent of the Moreno district has no gas network, Clarín reported.
