Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has ruled out a meeting with his Argentine counterpart, Javier Milei, during the latter’s scheduled visit to Mexico City in late August to meet with businesspeople and take part in a conservative summit.
“I don’t agree with his way of thinking and personality," said the Mexican left-wing politician during his morning press conference on Tuesday, outlining his reasons for not welcoming the ultra-liberal leader.
Milei is due to attend the Mexican chapter of the CPAC Conservative Political Action Conference, as informed via Instagram by actor Eduardo Verástegui, who unsuccessfully sought to be a presidential candidate in the election on June 2 in Mexico.
López Obrador pointed out that, at any rate, Milei’s government had not requested a meeting.
Milei's top spokesperson Manuel Adorni confirmed on Tuesday that Milei would travel to Mexico on August 23 for a meeting with businesspeople.
“I understand the following day he’ll take the opportunity to take part in CPAC Mexico,” he specified at a press conference.
The meeting will take place in a hotel in the exclusive area of Polanco in the Mexican capital.
In addition to Milei, Colombian Senator María Fernanda Cabal and Brazilian lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former head of state Jair Bolsonaro, are expected to attend.
López Obrador and Milei have made their differences public ever since the Argentine called him an “ignoramus” and the Mexican head of state answered by saying that he did not understand “how Argentines, being so intelligent, had voted for someone not in his right mind, who despises the people."
López Obrador had called Milei a “conservative fascist" beforehand.
