Man detained over Sociedad Rural Argentina explosive package released

A 40-year-old man arrested in connection with the investigation into last week’s letter-bomb attack at the offices of the Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA) is released from custody.

A 40-year-old man arrested in connection with the investigation into last week’s letter-bomb attack at the offices of the Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA), which left one person with minor injuries, has been released from custody.

Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas ruled on Monday that real-estate agent Alberto Santiago Soria should be released given the lack of evidence proving that he was the individual who delivered the parcel bomb to the Barracas branch of the private courier Andreani, from where it was dispatched.

Soria, who has a criminal background for making anti-Semitic threats, was arrested last Friday night around midnight in the Buenos Aires City neighbourhood of Floresta.

The alleged perpetrator of the attack was apprehended in the early hours after a search of his home on suspicion of causing intentional bodily harm and material damage.

At the time of the arrest, Soria was at home with his partner and two children and offered no resistance, as indicated by sources.

He was questioned over the weekend by Judge Rafecas, but Soria denied the allegations against him and produced a trustworthy alibi, proving that at the time the package was posted, he was attending a training session at an events room in the City neighbourhood of Palermo.

"Soria was not the one who delivered the explosive package to the Andreani headquarters in the Barracas neighbourhood. This has been confirmed not only by the cameras and images at the event where Soria is seen taking part in the activity, but also by the antennae from his mobile phone, which confirm this," judicial sources explained.

The explosive package, addressed to Sociedad Rural Argentina President Nicolás Pino, was opened by his secretary, who suffered minor injuries when it exploded. Two others received medical care due to smoke inhalation.

A second package, addressed to the organisation’s vice-president, was successfully disposed of by the authorities.
