Milei backs Trump as he launches Argentina roadshow in New York

President voices strong support for Donald Trump, forecasts global political shifts driven by war and geopolitics.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei offered his US counterpart Donald Trump his full backing on Monday as he began a series of events in New York aimed at promoting Argentina as a reliable destination for investment.

The La Libertad Avanza leader arrived in the United States after attending a Trump-led security summit in Miami over the weekend.

The visit to New York forms part of “Argentina Week”, a roadshow designed to attract investors and present the country as a stable business partner after sweeping economic reforms.

Milei said the initiative would use “the tools of financial analysis to show that Argentina is a great investment opportunity.”

Speaking in New York City, Argentina’s President also outlined his geopolitical vision, warning of a major reordering of the international system driven by ongoing conflicts.

He boldly predicted the “fall” of several trading partners that he said “tarnish” the name of the People’s Republic of China.

“China will become more isolated in the sense that many of its partners, which are bad partners and which stain its name, will fall, and then the situation will be purer and cleaner,” Milei claimed.

The Argentine leader praised Trump, arguing that the US president was working to bring peace to the war between Russia and Ukraine while also confronting security threats linked to Iran.

“This is nothing more than a temporary situation, a temporary deterioration that the world economy may experience, but whose consequence will be a very strong political reordering,” he said.

Milei dismissed claims that current global tensions are primarily about energy resources. “Many analysts believe this is a fight over oil. That kind of argument is conceptually very weak and mistaken. What matters purely and exclusively is geopolitics,” he said.

He argued that Washington is seeking to consolidate its leadership across the Americas and warned that Iran’s nuclear ambitions pose a global threat.

“If it were not for the decision and courage of President Trump, Iran would have achieved military power, with the risks that implies not only for the Middle East but for the rest of the world,” he said.

In a television interview broadcast on Sunday, Milei had reiterated his support for US and Israeli actions in the Middle East.

“I fully and absolutely support the position of the United States and Israel,” he told journalist Luis Majul, accusing Iran of financing international terrorism and continuing to develop nuclear capabilities despite international commitments.

Milei also suggested that rising oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East could benefit Argentina’s economy by improving its terms of trade.

“It is likely that by the second half of the year all the war processes will have come to an end and, in that context, prices will adjust. From the external side it will be very favourable for Argentina. The key is to know how to take advantage of it,” he said.

As part of his New York visit, Milei is scheduled to speak at Yeshiva University and attend a gala organised by The Algemeiner, a prominent event recognising influential figures in Jewish life and support for Israel.

He will remain in the United States until midweek before travelling to Chile for the inauguration of José Antonio Kast as president in Valparaíso.

Milei has been building close ties with the Chilean conservative leader, with the pair promoting a shared agenda focused on security, migration and economic recovery.
