Milei plans visit to Paraguay for Peña meeting and CPAC event

President to meet Paraguayan counterpart, address conservative summit after scrapping Spain trip for far-right rally.

President Javier Milei will travel to Paraguay next Tuesday (September 16) for a bilateral meeting with his counterparty Santiago Peña and attend an edition of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), according to reports.

Government sources quoted by the Noticias Argentinas news agency said the agenda is still being finalised, but that the two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral ties, as well as Mercosur trade bloc.

A Milei-Peña meeting would be their third meeting since Argentina’s President took office in December 2023. The Paraguayan is one of the few leaders in the region with whom the right-wing libertarian shares clear ideological ground.

The trip comes after Milei cancelled a planned visit to Madrid this weekend, where he had been scheduled to appear at an event hosted by the far-right Spanish party Vox.

Following the government’s heavy defeat in Buenos Aires Province elections last weekend, the President has opted instead for a shorter journey to Asunción.

CPAC will be held on September 15 and 16 at the Sheraton Hotel in Asunción, marking the first time the ultra-conservative gathering has taken place in Paraguay.

Peña himself is among the speakers. Tickets range from US$100 to US$5,000.

Milei will likely attend a joint honorary session of Paraguay’s Congress on Tuesday morning, convened by Senate head Basilio ;Bachi’ Núñez. He may additionally join an event with business leaders.

It will be Milei’s second visit to Asunción this year. In April, he met Peña at the Government Palace, praising his administration’s application of free-market policies. At the time, the La Libertad Avanza remarked that Paraguay had attracted investment and migration by “diligently applying the ideas of economic liberty.”
