Protesters block off streets in Buenos Aires in show of discontent

Tens of thousands staged a demonstration to protest the government's austerity measures and demand solutions to the country's economic crisis this afternoon.

Demonstrators, led by labour unions and social organisations, gridlocked traffic on some of the main avenues of the capital Wednesday as a number of rallies congregated on the City's streets.

Social organisations, striking teachers, students campaigning for the "defence of public eduction"  and laid-off shipyard workers were among the varied groups that took to the streets.

Some of the protesters even cooked stews in big pots and offered them to passers-by to dramatise growing poverty levels, with some social organisations are campaigning for the government to declare a food emergency.

Consumer prices are soaring in Argentina, with inflation rising and unemployment high. The peso has sharply depreciated this year against the dollar.

The crisis forced President Mauricio Macri's government to seek a US$50-billion credit line the International Monetary Fund this year.

The president recently announced new duties on exports and the elimination of several government ministries to calm investor concerns about the country's ability to pay its debts.
