'Forbes' magazine names Argentina's five-richest billionaires

US magazine 'Forbes' has published its traditional survey looking at the 50 most wealthy Argentines –

US magazine Forbes has named the five richest Argentines in the world, with no surprises among the wealthiest billionaires.

The top five in the annual ranking published by the finance magazine have a total wealth of US$28.2 billion. Topping the list is MercadoLibre entrepreneur Marcos Galperin, followed by pharmaceutical kingpin Hugo Sigman, gas and energy businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni, Molinos Río de la Plata president and rally car driver Luis Pérez Companc and steel tycoon Paolo Rocca, according to the Forbes list.

The data produced indicates the extent of inequality in the nation. According to the magazine, if its list is expanded out to the 50 wealthiest Argentines, the cumulative wealth of the group reaches US$78 billion – equivalent to more than two-and-a-half times the current gross Central Bank reserves of the country.

According to Forbes, Galperin heads the list with US$ 8.5 billion, mostly generated by his company Mercado Libre, which is active in 18 countries across the globe.

The second fortune belongs Sigman, a powerful businessman in the pharmaceutical laboratory industry with US$ 6.3 billion.

In third is Bulgheroni, the leader of the Pan American Energy Group, with US$ 5.1 billion

Luis Pérez Compan and his family group – predominantly active in food and energy – is fourth, with US$ 4.2 billion.

With US$100 million less, the fifth place is for Paolo Rocca, CEO of the Techint Group

According to Forbes, in its 2024 ranking, a number of "new millionaires” have been incorporated. One of the most striking additions is that of ex-airline pilot turned film actor and producer Enrique Piñeyro, who with US$420 million occupies 50th place on the list.

Superstar forward Lionel Messi had a formal wealth of US$1.5 billion until June 2024, but his assets are reduced by the payment of taxes. He is the only national athlete that appears on the list.
