Record daily death toll pushes Argentina past 90,000 fatalities

Health Ministry reports new high of 792 deaths in 24 hours, taking Argentina past 90,000 Covid-19 fatalities since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Health Ministry reported a new high of 792 deaths in 24 hours on Tuesday, as Argentina surpassed 90,000 deaths from Covid-19.

The record-breaking daily death toll was the worst registered since May 18, when 744 fatalities were recorded. 

In addition, government officials said that an additional 21,387 confirmed cases of coronavirus had been registered over the previous 24 hours. 

As usual, Buenos Aires Province reported the highest number of new infections (6,951), followed by the provinces of Córdoba (3,791), Santa Fe (1,479) and Buenos Aires City (1,344).

Argentina’s health system continues to come under strain. Across the country, there are 7,326 individuals currently hospitalised with Covid-19 in intensive care units, with bed occupancy in these wards reaching 72.6 percent nationwide and 70.7 percent in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area (AMBA).

A total 4,298,782 infections have been registered by the authorities since the start of the pandemic, of which 3,928,389 are now classified as recovered. More than 280,000 individuals are still undergoing treatment.

Argentina has taken delivery of more than 20 million vaccines, with 18,380,675 doses now having been given. Of that total, 14,660,693 people have received a single dose, while 3,719,982 have completed the vaccination process.

A new shipment of more than 768,000 doses of the Chinese-made Sinopharm Covid-19 shot arrived at Ezeiza international airport on Tuesday night, following the arrival of two other shipments the previous day (1.139 million doses of AstraZeneca; another 768,000 doses of Sinopharm).
