Security Ministry accused of stymieing medicinal cannabis

A law legalising medical cannabis was passed a year ago. It authorises the State to import marijuana for the elaboration and commercialisation of oils.

The Security Ministry led by Patricia Bullrich is impeding the importation and cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes, a group of activists claims.

The Ministry “has not authorised the importation or cultivation” of the raw material needed to treat a range of medical conditions, Valeria Salech from the NGO Mamá Cultiva told AM 750.

A law legalising medical cannabis was passed a year ago. It authorises the State to import cannabis for the elaboration and commercialisation of oils. It also allows people to cultivate the plant and produce their own oil.

“The executive branch is putting the brakes” on the implementation of the law, Salech said.

“From April 2016, the Ministry has not received us” and has not “authorised the importation or cultivation” of cannabis, she charged.

Relatives and patients say they continue to fear arrest. “Last week there was a raid in Mendoza. They took plants and oils”, Salech said.
