Sister of River Plate midfielder in custody after police stop uncovers 40kg of cocaine

An elder sister of River Plate midfielder Nicolás De La Cruz was in Buenos Aires on Saturday while travelling in a taxi. Police officers find 40 kilogrammes of cocaine in vehicle.

The sister of River Plate midfielder Nicolás De La Cruz has been arrested in Buenos Aires on drugs charges, after being stopped travelling as a passenger in a taxi while carrying around 40 kilogrammes of cocaine.

Stefany de la Cruz, the Uruguayan footballer's elder sister and one of 10 siblings, was stopped in Caballito on Saturday, when the car she was travelling in was stopped by City Police officers after the vehicle passed a traffic checkpoint.

The driver, a 42-year-old man of Peruvian nationality with a taxi licence to work in the capital, was also detained. The case is now in the hands of National Criminal and Federal Correctional Court No. 7. Both individuals remain in custody.

Local reports said 100 grammes of cocaine were also found below the driver's seat.

"The player has nothing to do with this case. He has not seen her for years, he has zero contact [with her]," a source close to the player told the Clarín newspaper on Saturday.

As the story continued to receive local speculation, the footballer flew to Brazil on Monday with his side. River are due to face Athletico Paranaense in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores, the region's most prestigious title.
