Three people were injured on Friday after a mail package exploded at the Escuela Superior de Gendarmería in the San Nicolás neighbourhood of Buenos Aires.
Two of the injured were taken to the nearby Hospital Argerich with burns, but their lives are not in danger, according to a preliminary report from the Buenos Aires City Police.
Another individual was treated for smoke inhalation.
The incident occurred in the early afternoon local time at Avenida Paseo Colón 533, a building located around 800 metres from the Casa Rosada.
According to the police report, Gendarmerie personnel – also known as Border Guards – were handling a parcel that had been received four months earlier when the explosion occurred.
Firefighters and ambulances arrived at the scene minutes later.
After the injured were taken away, police cordoned off the area, shutting down traffic and evacuating the building and others on the same block, local media reported.
Officers from the bomb squad were working at the scene. National Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva was also present, though she left minutes later without answering questions.
Local reports said the supposed recipient of the parcel was a former director of the school who retired four months ago. He visited the school Friday to collect the parcel that detonated.
Argentina’s National Gendarmerie is a federal security force that operates at borders, strategic sites and in matters of internal security.
