Details from the investigation into alleged abuse, violence and battery by former president Alberto Fernández against his former partner, ex-first lady Fabiola Yáñez, continue to leak out into the press.
An audio recording allegedly featuring the former head of state was published by the Infobae website this week. In it, a voice identified as Fernández insults Yáñez repeatedly.
The former first lady, according to the website, provided the audio to the courts, along with photographs and other evidence. The recording was allegedly made during an argument at the then-couple’s bedroom at the Olivos presidential residence.
In the clip delivered to prosecutors, Fernández swears at Yáñez and calls her an idiot, among other insults.
Yáñez, 43, filed a complaint on August 6 accusing Fernández, 65, of having beaten her during their relationship, which ended after he left office in 2023, and of "psychological terrorism."
Prosecutors are investigating nine alleged episodes of violence including emotional abuse, physical aggression and harassment, which allegedly took place from 2016 to early 2024.
Revelations from the case are going public on an almost daily basis.
Local media reported this week that defence lawyers for Fernández – who denies the allegations against him – had supplied images of his former partner drinking alcohol.
The former president, who says the couple argued but that there was no physical violence, says Yáñez had a drinking problem and consumed alcohol excessively. Lawyers representing Fernández say the addiction affected her emotional state.
In mid-August, the ex first lady raised similar accusations and asked Fernández “not to pretend to be a teetotaller.” According to her, the former president drank alcohol frequently and smoked marijuana while in office.
From the former president’s circle, they intend to attribute the blows not to Fernández’s violence, but to falls Yáñez allegedly suffered given her apparent addiction.
The former first lady’s allegations were supported by her mother Miriam Verdugo, who testified this week in the case.
Court sources told the Noticias Argentinas news agency that Verdugo said she had witnessed Fernández push her daughter when she was pregnant and supported claims that the former president had asked Yáñez in 2016 to have an abortion.
Translation of transcript of the alleged audio recording disseminated by Infobae:
Fernández: I've had to put up with a thousand of these things.
Yañez: But I didn’t sleep with any of them, you jerk…
Fernández: “Oh, we have to see Sandra’s production.” What Sandra, fuck you! It’s probably a shit series, and when I want to see an Argentine film, we can’t, because they’re all shit? But because that one was made by your friend, go fuck yourself, you and all your offspring, you idiot!
Yañez: Shh, shh, lower your voice. You’ve always done this, pushed me away from all the people who were a threat to you.
Fernández: You can keep them, you idiot. What threat…?
Yañez: All the people that were a threat to you…
Fernández: Go and keep them, you idiot, keep them and leave me alone.
Yañez: Why do I have to keep them? What did I say that you took to heart?
