Buenos Aires City reports September inflation rate of 4%

There was a slight slowdown from 4.2 percent in August.

Inflation slowed slightly to four percent in September in the nation’s capital, dropping 0.2 points from the previous month.

According to data from City Hall’s statistics bureau, annual inflation is running at 218.8 percent, with consumer prices up 115.1 percent since the turn of the year.

Goods rose 3.1 percent last month, with services up 4.6 percent. Seasonal products were up 2.9 percent, with regulated prices recording the last highs of 4.8 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, a closely watched category, rose around half of the general index at 2.2 percent. Meats and related products were up 4.1 percent, breads and cereals 2.5 percent and milk, dairy and eggs rose 2.3 percent.

Increases of 4.7 percent were seen in personal care and hygiene items, with household maintenance items up 4.3 percent thanks to rising rent prices and public utility costs.

Healthcare saw an average increase of five percent, pushed by rising private insurance costs. Education rose 3.6 percent, propelled by hikes in private school fees.

Keeping in line with fare increases and fuel costs, transport recorded a 5.1 percent rise in September.

Clothing prices increased 5.6 percent, despite the recession and falling consumption rates that have curbed sales.

Inflation in the City is a proxy of nationwide inflation, although it is more affected by household maintenance and public services.

President Javier Milei’s government aspires to a nationwide inflation rate of 3.5 percent or under when INDEC updates its report on Thursday.
