Argentina to play Honduras and Iceland in pre-World Cup friendlies

'La Scaloneta' will face Honduras on June 6 in Texas and Iceland’s senior side on June 9 in Alabama ahead of World Cup kick-off.

Argentina’s national team will play two friendlies against Honduras and Iceland in June in the United States, as part of their preparations to defend their title at the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine Football Association announced on Thursday.

'La Scaloneta' – as the team managed by Lionel Scaloni is nicknamed – will face Honduras on June 6 in Texas and Iceland’s senior side on June 9 in Alabama, said AFA in a post on social media.

Lionel Messi’s team is coming off a 5–0 thrashing of Zambia in Buenos Aires, following a lacklustre performance against Mauritania that ended in a 2–1 win for the Albiceleste.

Both matches were played in March at Boca Juniors’ iconic La Bombonera stadium and, with Messi leading the charge, marked the team’s final home fixtures before travelling to the United States for the 2026 North American World Cup.

The reigning world champions will face Honduras at Kyle Field in Texas, while the match against the Europeans will take place at Jordan–Hare Stadium in Alabama.

Neither Honduras nor Iceland will take part in the upcoming World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and will run from June 11 to July 19.

Iceland drew 1–1 in a friendly against Haiti, who qualified for the World Cup for the first time in half a century. Honduras, who finished behind the Caribbean nation in the qualifying standings, are coming off a 2–2 draw with Peru. Both matches were played on 31 March, during the latest FIFA international window.
