Italian footballer Daniele De Rossi, World Cup champion in 2006, arrived in Buenos Aires early Thursday to join the club Boca Juniors which is set to present the defensive midfielder with great fanfare on Friday.
The 36 year old was received at Ezeiza international airport by Boca fans and members of the media in a chaotic arrival that showed the euphoria that has been aroused by his signing with the “xeneize.”
De Rossi, who arrives at Boca after 18 years and 636 matches at AS Roma, did not make any statements but appeared relaxed and took pictures with fans who received him with club songs.
The player will undergo rigorous medical trials before signing his contract with Boca, while in the afternoon he will mit with the rest of the squad for the first time.
“He will bring experience and authority [to the club],” Boca trainer Gustavo Alfaro said.
De Rossi will fulfill his personal desire to play in a blue and gold shirt in la Bombonera after agreeing to come to Boca with the current sporting director of the club, Nicolás Burdisso, his former teammate at AS Roma.
“I couldn’t end my career without playing in Boca,” De Rossi said before leaving Italy.
The Italian will be one of more than 100 foreigners to play in the Superliga Argentina this season.
