Kenyans dominate podium at Buenos Aires Half Marathon

Kenyan athletes dominated the men's podium and an Ethiopian woman topped the women's podium at the 23,000-strong Buenos Aires Half Marathon on Sunday.

Kenyan athletes dominated the men's podium and an Ethiopian woman topped the women's podium at the 23,000-strong Buenos Aires Half Marathon on Sunday.

Among the men, the winner was Roncer Konga Kipkorir who completed the 21 kilometres in under an hour – 59 minutes and eight seconds. He was followed by his Kenyan compatriots Felix Kipkoech (59 minutes, 28 seconds) and Mwangi Cosmas Boi (59 minutes, 29 seconds).

On the women's podium, first place went to Ethiopia's Yeshaneh Ababel Brihane (one hour, six minutes, 10 seconds), followed by compatriot Shone Guteni Imana (one hour, 6 minutes, 12 seconds) and Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich (one hour, six minutes, 18 seconds).

A record number of participants took part in year's event, which took place amid cool and sunny southern winter weather and with a new circuit taking in some of the sights of the capital.

Among the best-placed Latin Americans was Argentina's Florencia Borelli, who finished eighth with a time of one hour, 9 minutes, 28 seconds – an improvement on her own South American record set in this race last year.

For the men, the Latin Americans with the strongest performances were Argentina's Ignacio Erario, seventh with a time of one hour, one minute, 58 seconds; followed by Peru's René Champi, who completed the course in one hour, two minutes, six seconds.

The 34th Buenos Aires Half Marathon is part of the calendar of the International Athletics Federation.
