‘You feel a bit ignorant’ – Lionel Messi expresses regret over not studying English

Argentina captain and Inter Miami forward says he “had the time to study” and regrets “a lot” not having done so earlier.

Argentina skipper Lionel Messi has said he regrets not studying more when he was younger – especially English – in an interview with a podcast released on Tuesday.

“I regret so many things. I tell my kids this all the time: get a good education. I wish I’d learned English when I was young,” the No. 10 admitted in conversation with the podcast Miro de atrás, hosted by former Albiceleste goalkeeper Nahuel ‘Patón’ Guzmán.

The Argentina captain and Inter Miami forward, who is defending his side’s crown in Major League Soccer this season, said he “had the time to study” and regrets “a lot” not having done so earlier.

“Later on you find yourself in situations with important people, wanting to talk or have a proper conversation, and you feel a bit ignorant, you know? I think, ‘What an idiot – how did I waste that time?’” he said.

During the interview, the 38-year-old star – who is expected to lead the world champions in their campaign to retain the title at this summer’s World Cup in North America – said he constantly tells his three sons to “make the most of their opportunities.”

“I never lacked anything, my dad always did whatever it took, but they have different possibilities,” he added.

Born in Rosario and a legend of Barcelona, with a less successful spell at Paris Saint-Germain, Messi also acknowledged that he struggled for years with public exposure, but feels “more relaxed” nowadays.

“People often imagine all sorts of things, but I’m as normal as it gets. I enjoy the small things, the details, my own space. I live like anyone else,” he said.
