Milei in demand at Davos as requests flood in for meetings

President's agenda for the World Economic Forum is not yet finalised, but Javier Milei's team has received at least 80 requests for an audience. A photo-op with the head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, is a given, and there will also be a bilateral with Emmanuel Macron.

President Javier Milei will travel to Davos, Switzerland, to take part in the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Monday, departing from Buenos Aires with a stopover in Germany.

The overseas trip will be the La Libertad Avanza leader’s first trip abroad as head of state.

His final agenda agenda have not yet been made public, but one revealing detail has been leaked by the president’s office: more than 80 requests for audiences with political leaders, economists and investors have been received

On Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni confirmed that Milei would meet with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva while in Switzeland.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, after the president has taken part in a panel event before the world’s economic and political elite at the high-profile summit.

Adorni said that the audience with Kristalina Georgieva “has been confirmed," adding that there is "interest that this Argentine Government is generating among world powers."

"They understand that we have returned to embrace the ideas of freedom and capitalism," said the spokesperson.

The meeting with Georgieva will take place after a breakthrough for the government. Last week, IMF staff endorsed Argentina’s latest quarterly review and agreed to disburse US$4.7 billion in funds. The deal is subject to approval from the multilateral lender’s executive board.

As well as facetime with Georgieva, Milei’s team have also agreed a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, say government sources. Details have yet to be finalised or publicised.

Milei will be one of the keynote speakers at the Davos summit, which brings together more than 100 representatives of governments, international organisations and leaders from various fields.

The president is due to depart Buenos Aires at 5.50pm local time on Monday on a commercial flight bound for Frankfurt, Germany, where he will arrive on Tuesday at 11.05 am local time (7:05 am Argentina time). After a brief stopover, he will head to Zurich, and from there he will travel overland to the Swiss Alps, where the event is being held.

The president is expected to arrive at the Steigenberger Icon Grandhotel Belvédère during his stay in Switzerland.

Milei, who is due to return to Argentina early Friday morning, will be accompanied to Europe by Karina Milei, his sister and secretary general to the Presidency, Cabinet Chief Nicolás Posse; Foreign Minister Diana Mondino; and Economy Minister Luis Caputo. Gerardo Werthein, Argentina’s proposed ambassador to the United States (nomination pending), is also set to attend.

The head of state will speak on Wednesday at a panel event entitled: "Achieving security and cooperation in a fractured world," during which he will outline the main points of his economic plan before world leaders.

He will also meet the founder of the international forum, Klaus Schwab.

Also due to speak that day are US Secretary of State Antony Blinken; General Secretary of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres; Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez; and Macron.
