Argentina designates Iran’s Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organisation

Milei government designates Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation; Decision based on organisation’s alleged involvement in attacks on the Israeli Embassy and AMIA Jewish community centre.

President Javier Milei’s government on Tuesday designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation amid the ongoing war in the Middle East, his office said in a statement.

In January, Argentina designated the Quds Force, a branch of the IRGC, with the same label, adding it to the Public Register of Persons and Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and Their Financing (RePET).

According to a resolution signed by President Javier Milei, Argentina’s decision to add the IRGC to its terrorist registry “enables the application of financial sanctions and operational restrictions aimed at limiting its ability to operate in the country.”

Since taking office in December 2023, Milei has aligned his nation closely with the United States and Israel, which he considers the country’s main allies and foreign policy north stars.

The President has referred to Iran as his “enemy” on several occasions.

In the statement, Milei’s government said that – according to investigations by Argentina’s Judiciary – members of the IRGC were involved in the planning and execution of the two deadliest attacks in the country’s history: the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires in March 1992, which killed 22 people and over 200 wounded, and the bombing of the AMIA Jewish community centre in July 1994, which left 85 people dead and more than 300 injured.

“This government is determined that the Argentine Republic should once again align itself with Western civilisation, while firmly condemning and confronting those who seek to destroy it,” read a statement from Milei’s office.

Milei’s government has designated several organisations as terrorist groups since taking office, often following in the footsteps of the United States. The groups include branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan, the Palestinian militant group Hamas, and Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The decision was taken in coordination with the Foreign Ministry, the National Security Ministry of National Security, Justice Ministry and the SIDE intelligence services, based on official reports substantiating illicit transnational activities, including acts of terrorism on national territory.
