Argentina’s Milei names interior minister in bid to spur reforms

Santilli, a member of former president Mauricio Macri’s PRO party, follows Milei’s appointment of Manuel Adorni as Cabinet chief.

President Javier Milei said he’s naming Diego Santilli as interior minister, tapping a veteran operative to help rally political support for his reform agenda.

“Diego will be the one to lead the conversations with governors and legislators in order to coordinate with the National Congress each of the necessary agreements for the reforms that are coming in the future,” Milei said on X.

Santilli, a member of former president Mauricio Macri’s PRO party, follows Milei’s appointment of Manuel Adorni as Cabinet chief.

Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party resoundingly won Argentina’s midterm elections on October 26, boosting the libertarian president’s quest to overhaul Argentina and break the country’s cycle of debt, default and crisis.

To capitalise, he’ll have to prove he can forge strong political alliances and avoid the pitfalls that have doomed previous reformist leaders – and that nearly cratered him ahead of the vote.

Macri has criticised the choice of Adorni as Cabinet chief, signalling tensions continue to simmer among the allies after last week’s midterm election.
