Argentina's economy minister pushes back on claim he asked people to sell their dollar savings in order to pay taxes.

Economy minister Luis Caputo has come out fighting after being criticised for having money in foreign bank accounts, claiming that it is the fruits of his work in the private sector and that he has declared it properly.

The criticism of President Javier Milei's leading economic figurehead over accounts in dollars he declared abroad were multiplied after the minister stated that “soon people will have to sell dollars to pay taxes."

In response to the accusations on the use of his savings, the official posted on X by listing a series of explanations to dismiss the suggestions of journalist Ari Lijalad.

Firstly, he claimed that “I earned my money through back-breaking work in the private sector and it’s reported properly.” Secondly, he clarified that “I do nothing with my savings, because if I do something and it turns out right, nasty guys like you will say I made it because I had inside information."

As for his statement that soon people would have to sell dollars to pay taxes, he specified, thirdly, that “I’m not asking anyone to do anything.” stating that he “was only explaining what we’re doing, for people to understand and make any decisions they wish, but with more information."

Fourthly, he redeemed his task in the Government by stating that “I left the private sector so that you guys don’t ever govern this country again, for the public sector to stop being a business and be in the service of society and fo rus to be the country decent Argentines deserve again”.

Moreover, aiming at the above-mentioned reporter he asserted that his words about his function are “surely the opposite of what you want” Lijalad had shared on the same social network a copy of Caputo’s tax return stating that he minister “has declared all his bank accounts in dollars and abroad, but he asks you to sell your savings to pay for your electricity bill."
