Casa Rosada expects slim defeat for ruling party in Buenos Aries Province vote

Latest polling numbers for government show slim defeat for La Libertad Avanza in Buenos Aires Province; Sources say they anticipate a loss of four points, a result they would view favourably in the current context.

Just days out from a key election in Buenos Aires Province, government sources say they anticipate a slim loss for the ruling party.

According to the latest polling numbers seen by the Casa Rosada, President Javier Milei's La Libertad Avanza will finish some four points behind the opposition Fuerza Patria alliance grouping the main Peronist parties. If those figures are confirmed at the ballot box in Sunday's vote, it would be "a triumph" said one source.

The source, a government spokesperson who spoke to accredited members of the press on Monday at the Casa Rosada, preferred to withhold their identity. But the analysis highlights fears in the government that recent corruption allegations could affect the ruling party at the polls.

“I have a poll which places us four points below Kirchnerism. To us, it’s a triumph to get between zero and five points underneath them,” stated the libertarian official, who explained that “a number of factors were involved.

“So, for us it is ideal to be four points below the Ks. It’s a victory”, insisted the libertarian leader.

The past two weeks have been dominated by a scandal involving alleged graft at the ANDIS national disability agency. Among those implicated in the bribery claims is Karina Milei, President Milei's sister and chief-of-staff. The source described those allegations as "a smear campaign" launched by the opposition.

Argentina's National Security Ministry has also filed a criminal complaint before the courts following the release by media outlets of audio recordings featuring Karina Milei that were made at the Casa Rosada. Officials have described it as "an act of illegal espionage," which may jeopardise national security.

he government source also noted, in their analysis, the impact of the decision by opposition Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof to bring forward the regional election and separate it from the national midterms, scheduled for October 26.

President Milei is due to hold a closing campaign rally on Wednesday in Moreno at the Villa Angela club.
