French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné will meet President Javier Milei next week during the European official's first trip to Latin America.
Séjourné which will also stop in Brazil during his tour, French diplomatic sources announced Thursday.
The visit to Argentina on February 19 and 20 "will highlight the importance of strengthening our ties with the countries of the South American continent," said French diplomacy spokesman Christophe Lemoine.
"It will also be an opportunity to clarify our position on trade relations between the European Union and Mercosur," said Lemoine.
France reiterated in January its opposition to signing the agreement currently under negotiation, amid a series of announcements to calm the protests farmers who reject the pact.
In Argentina, where Séjourné lived in his youth, "he will be received" by Milei and will also meet with Foreign Minister Diana Mondino and heads of the Security, Defence and Economy portfolios, the spokesman said.
The French minister will then travel on Wednesday to Brazil, where he will remain the following day to participate in a meeting with his G20 counterparts in Rio de Janeiro, he added.
Séjourné, who has only been in office since January 11, comes just weeks before the planned visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Brazil at the end of March.
