President elect Javier Milei's office has finally confirmed that there will be a Health Ministry in his new government, despite a previous vow to degrade it to a Secretariat and assimilate it into his new Human Capital Ministry.
Cardiologist Mario Russo, who previously served in the San Miguel and Morón municipal governments of Buenos Aires Province, has been appointed to the role, a statement from the president-elect's office on social media said.
It added that lawyer Florencia Mizrahi had been named as the head of the AFIP tax agency, putting to bed rumours that La Libertad Avanza Buenos Aires City mayoral candidate Ramiro Marra would take the role.
In reference to the reports events, the libertarian deputy posted the following statement on his X account.
“Given the different versions about my potential appointments, I must explain that I will remain a Deputy for Buenos Aires City. I never spoke to my friend, president @JMilei, about a specific position in the national government because I never wanted one,” said Marra, who will now take office as a lawmaker the capital. "My only goal was always to defeat Kirchnerism and WE DID IT. Now we have to work hard to rebuild our Homeland."
The appointment of Russo to the Health Ministry means that Milei's Cabinet will now have nine ministries, instead of the previously trailed eight. The identifies of all the top-tier portfolio chiefs now reads as thus: Patricia Bullrich (Security), Luis Petri (Defence), Luis Caputo (Economy), Diana Mondino (Foreign Affairs), Guillermo Francos (Interior), Mariano Cúneo Libarona (Justice), Guillermo Ferraro (Infrastructure), Sandra Pettovello (Human Capital) and Russo (Health).
