Milei first in line as Argentina launches updated ID card, passport

Newly redesigned documents incorporate a polycarbonate safety chip to prevent forgeries; President Javier Milei first to register for new electronic DNI identification document.

President Javier Milei headed the presentation of the new electronic DNI identification document along with updating the Argentine passport, documents which incorporate state-of-the-art technology to raise safety standards.

Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei, Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni and Interior Minister Diego Santilli also participated in the ceremony.

The initiative fits within a process of integral modernisation to place the country among the highest standards in the world in terms of the reliability of travel and identification documents.

The new DNI represents a historic change since it is manufactured with polycarbonate, improving its durability, and including an electronic safety chip. The latter stores the owner’s data in encrypted form, permitting the identity to be verified without need for access to external data bases, making forgery "practically impossible,” said the government in a statement.

Argentina’s refreshed passport design also adds polycarbonate pages with the data engraved in laser, along with new security elements both visible and invisible.

With this updating, the travel document matches the top global standards, aligning itself with the systems used by the most advanced countries, said the government.
