Milei plans structural reform blitz after midterms triumph

President promises new economic roadmap built on labour, tax and pension overhauls; Milei government says the reforms will restore fiscal balance and set the country on a path to long-term growth.

Emboldened by his sweeping midterm victory, Argentina’s President Javier Milei has confirmed he will launch a “new economic roadmap” built around three major reforms: labour, tax and pensions.

Milei said the three reforms form the pillars of his ‘Pacto de Mayo,’ the broad reform agreement with provincial governors to anchor his economic overhaul.

“We are going to advance with the structural reforms to which we are committed with the Argentine people,” Milei, 55, declared this week, promising that the legislative offensive will begin once the new Congress takes office on December 10.

The La Libertad Avanza (LLA) win not only strengthened the government’s support base but, in Milei’s words, marked the start of a “new political stage” to drive through his libertarian agenda.

A ‘freer Argentina’

Milei says his ultimate goal is to make Argentina “the freest [country] in the world,” a vision grounded in three key policy areas:

Labour reform: a modernisation drive to promote formal employment and bring millions of informal workers into the system.
Tax reform: a simplification plan aimed at cutting up to 20 taxes and easing the burden on trade and investment.
Pension reform: a new framework to ensure the system’s long-term sustainability while protecting individual contributions.

These initiatives align with the Pacto de Mayo’s broader commitments: fiscal balance, private property protection and greater openness to global trade.

Balance of power

Thanks to LLA’s improved representation, Milei will now have enough seats in the lower house to uphold presidential vetoes, while Peronism loses its long-held Senate majority – a major shift the government sees as unlocking the “legislative road.”

With a reshuffled Cabinet and stronger negotiating position, Milei says he is ready to strike deals with provincial governors to secure the votes needed for his reform package.

Economic promise

The President insists these reforms will unleash growth, curb inflation and bring sharp reductions in poverty and destitution.

With fresh political momentum, Milei’s government plans to push the bills through Congress before year’s end – betting that his second year in office will deliver the economic turnaround he has long promised.
