Wild horses on Panamericana! Neigh-bours stun local residents in Argentina

Number of animals temporarily escape the Army’s Campo de Mayo compound and stun local drivers by taking to the motorway in Buenos Aires.

The footage of horses galloping along the Panamericana motorway are like spectacular scenes out of a movie. But how did a group of horses come to take to the highway and how did motorists and local residents react?

To boot, what happened to the animals? Late on Monday, there was an official release from the Horse Guards, the unit to which the animals belong, wrapping up the mystery.

“On Monday afternoon, a group of horses from our unit who were grazing at Campo de Mayo apparently tore down part of the perimeter fence keeping them in and escaped the premises. This situation is currently being investigated,” began the release, posted on X.

“The procedure was triggered immediately for this type of incident, by locating, checking and transferring the horses once again to a safer site. Fortunately the horses are now being kept without any injury, but still being tested accordingly”, the Horse Guard informed.

The horses, which according to sources were 46, escaped on Monday from the Army’s Campo de Mayo premises. Several of them were sighted galloping on kilometre 202 of the Panamericana motorway. The surprise among drivers and bus passengers was great: the scene was completely unusual.

The animals burst into the Buenos Aires Province towns of Don Torcuato and Boulogne. Because of it, Road Safety staff alerted Panamericana staff for them to take action.

After the escape, a joint operation was mounted by the Horse Guard, the Campo de Mayo School of Horse Troops and the Border Guard. At 6:16 pm on Monday, some 20 were spotted at the corner of Pelliza and Echeverría, in Munro, Vicente López. Initially they thought the horses might have escaped from the San Isidro Racetrack. With the help of civil defence six animals were recaptured. Later, according to sources from the San Isidro City Hall, the operation stopped 19 more of them.

They were first gathered tied to police cars up to the Villa Adelina riding club to keep them safe. Then they were taken in Border Guard lorries.

Even though the Horse Guards’ release, without giving numbers, implies that all horses are safe, some sources claimed that on Monday night some of them still had to be rescued. Conflicting versions stated that some may have been kept in private homes and even that some animals may have made it to Buenos Aires City.

The unexpected situation was recorded by drivers’ mobile phones in the area and quickly went viral on social networks.

They were over 40 horses who broke down a fence and escaped through Gate 7 of Campo de Mayo. They belong to the Horse Guards and took part in a parade at La Rural.
