Famed ballet dancer Julio Bocca named new director of Teatro Colón

World-famous ballet dancer will replace Jorge Telerman at the helm of Buenos Aires’ most famous theatre, along with Gerardo Grieco.

Maestro ballet dancer Julio Bocca will replace Jorge Telerman as the general and artistic director of Buenos Aires’ famed Teatro Colón Theatre, the Buenos Aires City government.

The change comes after City Hall’s Culture Minister Gabriela Ricardes displaced Telerman, a former mayor of the nation’s capital.

Bocca, 57, will be in charge of the world-renowned theatre together with Uruguayan culture director Gerardo Grieco and a team of collaborators that will be officially presented in November.

According to City government sources, the authorities intend to position the Teatro Colón as a “sustainable theatre based on example." They briefed “a return to the origins, the cradle of the great artists of Argentina and the region, promotes the excellence and artistic rigour of our talents.”

Ricardes said in a statement that she was “very happy” with the new team.

“I believe a lot in teamwork and they have demonstrated that they know how to take forward a process such as is needed at the Colón Theatre.

“They’re already working on the transition and the 2025 programme, which will be up to what we want from the Colón Theatre, a global reference for culture,” she added.

Bocca pronounced himself delighted, adding he is “very happy to come home” and excited by the proposition.

"With Julio we have already formed the team which will accompany us. We’re working on the broad lines which will mark our management with the accent of work on the ensembles, upgrading local talent and the relationship with other recognised theatres on the world stage,” explained Grieco.

The Teatro Colón is widely considered one of the most important opera houses in the world.

It opened to the public for the first time on May 25, 1908. The legendary performance space is considered by specialists as having some of the best acoustics in the world, as well as being one of the most beautiful theatres.
