Two porteño pairs crowned champions of 2024 Buenos Aires Tango Festival and World Championship at event before 10,000 spectators at Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires.

Two pairs of porteños were crowned champions of the 2024 Buenos Aires Tango Festival and World Championship on Tuesday, with the duos winning the two categories before a large home crowd.

The finals, played out in front of more than 10,000 people at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires for the first time, saw porteños dancing sensations Ayelén Morando and Sebastián Martínez named the winners of the Tango Escenario category. The section is characterised by a highly choreographed style, in which dancers are allowed to break their embrace and perform jumps and pirouettes.

In the more classic Tango de Pista section, which harks back to the traditional style still danced in the milongas of Buenos Aires today, fellow porteños Fátima Caracoch and Brenno Márques, also representatives of Buenos Aires, were crowned winners.

After their coronation, Caracoch and Márques danced the classic tango ‘Loca’ by Juan D'Arienzo, in front of the huge crowd in Villa Crespo, appropriately enough the neighbourhood of tango giant, the composer Osvaldo Pugliese.

Morando and Martínez, for their part, received their awards with tears in their eyes, before later dancing to ‘El Marne’ by the Forever Tango Orchestra.

In the Senior category, for those aged over 55 years old, Marcela Patricia Jara and Luis Mario Sailhueque, from Trelew, Chubut Province, were named winners.

The event was the closing event of the 2024 edition of the Tango BA festival, organised by the Buenos Aires City government. It began on August 14 and attracted more than 70,000 spectators and 2,000 artists to events in the capital.

In the first rounds of the international competition, a record 750 couples from 53 countries registered to take part.
