Singer Natalia Oreiro defies Putin's anti-gay propaganda laws

Natalia Oreiro has a huge following in Russia, a country where the LGBT community is harassed and persecuted.

If anyone can do it, she can.

Uruguayan singer Natalia Oreiro this week paid a visit to Russkoe, Russia’s public radio, where she wore a shirt bearing the rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBT community.

Oreiro is in Russia to promote her song United by Love as part of a caravan of artists invited to participate in 2018 World Cup festivities.

The 41-year-old has a huge following in Russia and is known to defy the country’s anti-gay propaganda laws which rights groups say have led to increased harassment and persecution of the country’s LGBT community.

Celebrity journalist Franco Torchia told the Confontados programme that Oreiro may face difficulties with immigration officials when she leaves the country.

But for the pop icon, it wouldn’t be the first time and seemingly it won’t be the last.
