Argentina's government 'disregards' Maduro’s 'fradulent' victory claim in Venezuela

Foreign Ministry in Buenos Aires condemns actions of the Venezuelan head of state, alleging Nicolás Maduro has "once again disdained the will of the Venezuelan people."

Argentina's government announced on Monday that it “rejects and disregards” the election result in Venezuela which gave Nicolás Maduro the victory, whom it accused of “once again disdaining the will of the people to live” in a “free, prosperous and democratic” nation.

For this reason, it has instructed its highest ranking diplomat in Caracas “not to take part in the rally to proclaim the ruling party candidacy called by Venezuelan authorities”.

“The Argentine Republic deems it essential to allow access by the opposition to voting protocols and urges Venezuelan authorities to observe the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which it is a party, especially Article 25,” the Foreign Ministry stated in a press release.

“The proscription and persecution of political opponents, the systematic violation of human rights, the rejection of the presence of inspectors and foreign press, as well as the obstacles imposed on registration abroad for its citizens to prevent them from voting, were all clear signs that this election would not be democratic or transparent,” it pointed out.

“Despite that, many members of the international community, including the Argentine Republic, chose to trust that, in that minimum space to participate left, a change was possible for Venezuela,” it added.

The Foreign Ministry reminded everyone that it “has emphatically and permanently denounced all these irregularities and the growing deterioration of the political and humanitarian situation in Venezuela, not only in words, but also through specific facts such as the diplomatic asylum granted to opposition leaders, who after four months have not yet been granted safe-passage to safely leave Venezuelan territory."

Lastly, it highlighted in the press release that Argentina “will continue to decidedly support the yearning of the Venezuelan people and makes a call to the international community to jointly disregard the fraudulent result of this election."
