Jones Huala to be expelled from Chile after Supreme Court ruling

Chile’s government has ordered the expulsion of Mapuche activist Facundo Jones Huala from the nation’s territory after the nation’s Supreme Court ordered the controversial indigenous leader be released from jail.

Jones Huala, the controversial leader of the Ancestral Mapuche Resistance (RAM) group, was freed by Chile’s highest court after it ruled the activist was “illegally deprived of his liberty” and completed serving a six-year prison sentence handed down in 2018 for firearms offences and arson.

According to the EFE news agency, Jones Huala was handed an expulsion notice last week by the Interior Ministry after the Supreme Court ruled that his sentence ended on June 14.

José Montalva, a delegate representing the Presidency, said that the expulsion order was a result of “the conviction for the crimes and his irregular migratory situation.”

According to reports, the activist has been given 10 days to leave the country and is banned from re-entering for 20 years.

Jones Huala was notified of the decision by police last Friday. The activist is currently hospitalised in a serious condition after ending a 50-day hunger strike.

His legal team says he is connected to an IV drip and consuming soft food after losing more than 20 kilos of weight.
