Milei considering US visit in event of Trump victory

President Javier Milei is betting on a Republican victory in tomorrow’s US election – and may consider a January trip to the inauguration should Donald Trump emerge victorious over Kamala Harris.

President Javier Milei is excited about Donald Trump’s potential victory in Tuesday’s US election and a trip to Washington is under consideration, should the Republican candidate win the race.

Despite the La Libertad Avanza government’s attempts to hide its favouritism for Trump, Argentina’s President is betting that the Republican will prevail over Democrat Party candidate Kamala Harris.

Such a turn of events would consolidate an ideological, as well as strategic, alliance with the United States.

On more than one occasion, Milei himself has made it clear that his government's alignment is with the White House, regardless of who takes office. But behind the cordial statements lies the hope that a Republican victory would simplify negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Since US President Joe Biden’s decision to step down from the race – and the subsequent swing in the polls – the Milei administration has been forced to moderate its speech. Officials have assured that Argentina is a “natural ally of the US, regardless of who wins.”

Though the US election takes place on November 5, the new POTUS is not inaugurated until the following January 20.

According to sources in his entourage, President Milei has not ruled out another trip to the United States for the inauguration ceremony at the US Capitol in Washington, though this would only happen if the GOP candidate wins.

The bond between Milei and Trump is fluid: not only do they exchange praise on social networks, they also message each other, and both are considered leading figures of the “New Right.”

The duo met at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland in February, with Milei praising Trump and predicting another four-year spell in the White House.

Once the results of the US elections are known, Argentina’s government will appoint an ambassador to the United States. The vacancy opened up after Gerardo Werthein took over as foreign minister, following last week’s abrupt departure of Diana Mondino.
