Milei’s Cabinet chief choice is a mistake, Macri says
Javier Milei should not have chosen Manuel Adorni as Cabinet chief, former president Mauricio Macri declares.
Javier Milei should not have chosen Manuel Adorni as Cabinet chief, former president Mauricio Macri said, signalling tensions continue to simmer among the allies after last week’s midterm election.
Macri described Adorni as “inexperienced” and a “mistaken” choice, according to a post on X. The Cabinet chief position should have gone to someone with a “more technical profile” and capable of strategic coordination such as Horacio Marín, the head of state-run oil company YPF, he said.
A resounding win for Milei’s party last week – with a lifeline from the United States – gave the libertarian president new momentum for his quest to overhaul Argentina and break the country’s cycle of debt, default and crisis. To capitalise, he’ll have to prove he can forge strong political alliances and avoid the pitfalls that have doomed previous reformist leaders – and that nearly cratered him ahead of the vote.
Sidelining allies such as Macri will make that job tougher.
Together with unresolved disputes within the government, Milei risks a “historic opportunity” in this new stage, Macri said. On Friday, Milei got a boost as his La Libertad Avanza party gained seven lawmakers in the lower house who switched from Macri’s PRO, La Nación reported.
